Realtime Stock Quotes

Nowadays, realtime stock quotes are available just about everywhere you look. In the old days, you used to have to wait until the paper came out the next day to find out how your stocks did.

Today, you can just access the internet and get up-to-date information on your stocks or potential stocks on a moment’s notice.

There are many sites that offer realtime stock quotes--too many to list here. However, the one thing you need to be aware of is that realtime stock quotes are not necessary to be a successful investor. In fact, they can actually be the downfall of your investing success. Here’s why.

When someone is able to immediately access and see what a stock price is selling at, it just encourages them to be more active in buying and selling, whether or not they really need to.

Also, now that this feature is available, many people can’t resist the temptation to look and see how their stock is doing, and often check in on a day to day basis.

Not only does realtime stock quotes cause them to waste time and prevent them from going out and finding more great deals, but it can often times cause them to lose sight of their long term strategies.

For instance, if someone buys a stock anticipating an annual 15% rate or return based no their research, they are best served to only check in once every so often. By checking in more than they need to, it may cause them to make an irrational decision based on a temporary decline or upswing in price.

The world’s best investors generally only check their stocks every few months. They are more focused on long term growth and yearly returns; not up to the minute information. However, we live in a day and age of fast-paced information, and trading is no exception.

The bottom line is this: there are many sites you can access to get real time stock quotes. However, their potential benefits are greatly overstated, and their drawbacks and bad habits they can form can be enormous.

In order to be successful in investing, all you really need to be able to do is locate a well-run company, check the price it is selling at, determine your expected annual rate of return, and check in every few months to verify you are on track. Do this, and realtime stock quotes suddenly become much less important.
